New York Comic Con 2011

Another New York Comic Con has come and gone (10/13/11-10/16/11) and KevinMLD and I made the trip up the New Jersey Turnpike for two days of the four-day show to see what this year had to offer. Once again, the event was massive and well attended with an almost overwhelming number of offerings from across the spectrum of comic book genre entertainment. It’s safe to say we both came away with a better feeling this year and I’d imagine that’s true for most of the other 100,000 plus in attendance over the four days at the Javits Center.

New York Comic Con 2011 X-Men: Regenesis panel

We’ve spent a good bit of time talking about this Fall’s X-Men: Regenesis here at MLD. Lots of changes are in store for the X-line, and the final day of this year’s New York Comic Con saw nearly all of the creators from the titles involved sitting for a panel talking with fans about what to expect. I almost skipped this presentation altogether after the difficulty of getting into any panels at last year’s show, but thankfully there were plenty of seats in the audience even if they had run out of room on the stage.

Thursday night was preview night at the New York Comic Con and I was shocked at the amazing amount of new toys on display already. Typically at these conventions most of the announcements of new products are made during the toy companies’ panels and then they go on display. So you can imagine our surprise at how many cool products were already on the floor.

New York Comic Con 2011 Preview Night

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

Last night was the opening of the 2011 New York Comic Con commonly called “preview night.” It’s a chance for press, professionals and 4-day pass holders to be the first on the show floor to see what this year has to offer. NYCC has grown by leaps and bounds and the inclusion of a preview night brings it closer to being on par with the annual mayhem at the San Diego Comic Con. One of the key attractions of Thursday night is undoubtedly the lighter crowds and we took full advantage trying to take in as much as we could in the time allotted.

So what exactly can attendees expect over the next thee days? Read on…

New York Comic Con 2010

This year’s New York Comic Con came and went this weekend (10/8/10-10/10/10), and this is a tough one to write up. In a word, it was overwhelming. I want to say I had a good time, but I don’t know that I came away from it with the experience that I was looking for. Thankfully, that wasn’t true for everyone here at MLD, and I did come back with a lot to write about.

The Show

Saturday was impossibly crowded. Reports indicate that 97,000 people attended the show throughout the weekend and it felt like every one of them was in the same aisle (Evan Dorkin sums it up well here). Attendees reported waiting up to an hour to get into the building and even to get into some of the panels. Both Saturday and Sunday were reported as “sold out,” but I’m not sure that point reflects a reasonable number for that space. Combining the show with the Anime Festival may have just been too much.
