Kaiju Big Battel ranks as one of the most absurd events I’ve ever attended, and I love it. I don’t know a lot about it, but it makes sense that I would enjoy it as it combines American professional wrestling with Japanese monster movies. I wasn’t going to post my “celebrity review” from the Philadelphia Comic Con by Wizard until later in the week.  I had a few more things I wanted to write up first, but then KevinMLD tried to steal my thunder and post about this very topic.  Jerk 😉

There weren’t many names on the list of celebrities scheduled to appear that I had ever heard before, let alone was interested in.  Having watched both America’s Next Top Model AND My Fair Brady, it seemed appropriate that the celebrity interview I requested was Adrianne Curry. Boooo! We totally beat England 1-1. Wait... What?

So most of us at MLD spent this past weekend at the former Wizard World East/Philly… which was renamed this year “the Philadelphia Comic Con.” This was an interesting move on Wizard’s part considering that there was virtually no presence at the event from the comic book establishment. Yes, there were comic book vendors and an artists alley, but completely missing from the festivities were representatives from DC and Marvel comics (as well as Dark Horse, IDW, Boom, or any other semi-major publisher). In fact, the only publishers I did notice at the event were Zenescope Entertainment, who publish a comic based on the defunct WB television show Charmed, and Avatar Press, who publish independent books from guys like Alan Moore, Warren Ellis, and Garth Ennis – none of whom were at the show. The lack of comic book companies showing up also meant there were none of the typical comic book panels highlighting what’s coming in the next year or announcements of any kind.

It has been a few years since I attended this show and so much has changed during that period.

We have already posted a bunch about the Philadelphia Comic Con thrown by Wizard and there is much more to follow.  I for one am fairly shocked by how much I came away with.  If you read this site for the comic book content, you don’t even know who I am.  If you know who I am from reading the site, you know that I am not a comic book fan.  In fact, we had cards printed up to hand out and one of my dislikes listed was comics.  Anyway.  My overall view of the Con… was that it was not about comics.  I had a great time, but I am completely exhausted.  And man, this all made blogging seem like so much work. Who knew there was a zombie sub-culture out there? Obviously, zombies are getting a lot of attention in films and comics, and the upcoming Walking Dead TV show on AMC is only going to add to that, but “live” zombie events like the Zombie Beach Party are completely new to everyone here.

Held at the Trocadero on Friday Night, the Beach Party was the official opening night event for Wizard World‘s 2010 Philadelphia Comic Con. Read more of this article »
