My Latest Pull List – July 18th, 2012

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

Weekly comic books are a big part of my life and below is a list of what I’ll be picking up this Wednesday along with cover artwork and previews courtesy of Comixology’s Pull List app.

Nine new books on my list this week.

  • AVENGERS ACADEMY #33 – I’m honestly looking forward to the AvX tie in ending here. It isn’t that I’m not enjoying the story, this is just a title that feels like one too many.
  • AVENGERS VS. X-MEN #8 – I love the way this series has picked up, but at the same time it feels like something big needs to happen here. The Phoenix Five aren’t likely to be the final threat and as the series transitions from Olivier Coipel to Adam Kubert it’s safe to expect there will be another fundamental shift in the balance of power.
  • CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 – This relaunch sort of evolves from the Secret Avengers tie ins to AvX, but it seems an odd time for a new series with Marvel Now on the schedule. Regardless I’m happy to see the former Ms. Marvel back in the spotlight now that it’s been some time since her last series ended. Hopefully writer Kelly Sue DeConnick can do right by her.
  • JUSTICE LEAGUE #11 – I’m a few issues behind on this series and found myself unable to locate #10 when I tried to catch up.
  • NEW MUTANTS #46 – I’m way behind but it’s been announced that this is the title’s final arc so catching up won’t be an uphill battle.
  • SAGA #5 – Expectations were high for Brian K. Vaughan’s (Y – The Last Man, Ex Machina, Runaways) new series and it’s safe to say it’s a hit. There are certainly elements that don’t appeal to me, but I am becoming invested in these characters and their struggles.
  • UNCANNY X-MEN #16 – This series has seen the best of the AvX tie ins. Though it got some serious competition from the Iron Fist story in New Avengers.
  • X-FACTOR #240 – A story focusing on Layla Miller before the series heads into an arc that will change everything starting in #241. Peter David joked that the series was ending, but I’m not so sure it’s a joke.
  • X-MEN #32 – It hasn’t been announced that the now Brian Wood penned series is ending, but it’s just a matter of time. This title felt superfluous from the moment it was first announced.

My Latest Pull List – July 11th, 2012

Weekly comic books are a big part of my life and below is a list of what I’ll be picking up this Wednesday along with cover artwork and previews courtesy of Comixology’s Pull List app.

Another big week with eight new books on my list for 7/11.

  • AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #9 – I don’t normally read this title, but I’m picking it up for the appearance by Captain Marvel (formerly Ms. Marvel) before her new series launches later this month.
  • AVX: VS #4 – I don’t like the “winners” that are picked at the end of these fights, but the series has featured some decent artwork.
  • BATMAN #11 – This series by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo and the Court of Owls arc have been fantastic. Very curious to see how it ends after last issue’s revelations.
  • NEW AVENGERS #28 – The Iron Fist chapters of the AvX tie-ins on this title were great, not sure that will continue as the focus shifts in this issue.
  • NEW MUTANTS #45 – All of the seeds Abnett and Lanning’s have planted throughout this series are meant to come together for this final arc. The two have done some brilliant work and I trust this will pay off.
  • SPIDER-MEN #3 – This has basically shipped every two weeks since issue #1, but there should be a month before #4 where I can catch up. I like what I’ve read so far.
  • UNCANNY X-FORCE #27 – This series has picked up again since the Otherworld arc (which I did enjoy to an extent) and it looks like some big things happen here.
  • WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #13 – Looks like the usual combination of action and silliness as the solicit describes the arrival of Gladiator and Kitty going on a mystery date.

My Latest Pull List – July 4th, 2012

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

Weekly comic books are a big part of my life and below is a list of what I’ll be picking up this Wednesday along with cover artwork and previews courtesy of Comixology’s Pull List app.

Seven new books and a day at home to read some of them. Happy 4th of July, everyone!

  • AGE OF APOCALYPSE #5 – I haven’t read this since issue #1 and I’m hoping to catch up today.
  • AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #689 – More Lizard to go with yesterday’s movie premiere. I made time to see it last night and I’m curious to hear what people thought.
  • AVENGERS VS. X-MEN #7 – I wouldn’t say I wasn’t enjoying this series, but it really turned a corner in the last two issues. Olivier Coipel’s art is a big part of that.
  • UNCANNY X-MEN #15 – I’ve lauded Kireon Gillen for his AvX tie-ins continuing his ongoing plots for this title and last issue was one of his best on the series. I honestly can’t wait to see what comes next with Mister Sinister, the Marauders, and all of his Madelyn Pryors.
  • WOLVERINE #310 – I read Loeb’s Evolution and wasn’t crazy about it. Sabretooth’s return is something I’m interested in, but the fact that he showed up months ago takes something away from this. We still don’t know how he came back, and Loeb’s past handling of mysteries has me on the fence here.
  • X-FACTOR #239 – Double shipping on this series has not worked in my favor. This one will put me three issues behind.

REVIEW: HBO’s The Newsroom

Posted by under *like, Television | Join The Discussion |

It starts with a forum in a college with a right winger, a left winger, and Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) who is dubbed the “Jay Leno of news anchors” because he’s friendly and doesn’t get on people’s nerves. College students are asking questions to both sides and Will spits out answers “I’ve voted for parties on both sides” and will only commit to being “a Jets fan.” Ha ha. But when a co-ed asks a simple question posed to most 5th graders, “what makes America the greatest country,” Will goes nuts. He totally loses it on the air. America isn’t great. America is screwed up. America is being beat by all these other countries in all these different areas.

And I was hooked.
