Weekly comic books are a big part of my life and below is a list of what I’ll be picking up this Wednesday along with cover artwork and previews courtesy of Comixology’s Pull List app.

Only six new books for me this week, though I will be taking a look at Image’s Harvest #1 and Think Tank #1.

• AGE OF APOCALYPSE #6 – I just caught up on the last four issues of this series and this one is going to have to make an serious impression for me to stick with it. So far it’s primarily consisted of bringing characters back into the mix (and back from the dead) after killing a large number of established AoA characters at the outset, and I’m not sure how effective it has been at making me care (even with the inclusion of Havok).
• AVENGERS VS. X-MEN #9 – I really love the cover to this issue and really hope there’s a fitting pay off inside the book. It’s an instance where the regular cover is far to superior to any of the many variants this book sees each month (which are featured for each issue here on MLD). The preview indicates that Iron Fist story in Brian Bendis’ New Avengers tie-ins will come into play here, and those have been some of the best issues related to this event.
• AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #10 – Part two of the guest appearance by the new Captain Marvel (formerly Ms. Marvel) as she and Spidey team up on the heels of her new series.
• FIRST X-MEN #1 – I have a lot of mixed feelings about this book. A secret history of mutant protectors could be fun if they don’t take the retcon too far. I want to trust that writer Christos Gage can make something like this work after his X-Men and Spider-Man series a few years ago, and Neal Adams created some of many favorite X-Men comics of all time. That was many years ago, but I’m willing to give it a shot.
• X-FACTOR #241 – An important arc that promises big changes for X-Factor starts here. In a recent interview, Peter David hinted and some great stuff coming out of these next few issues and I’m particularly excited about the Polaris story featured in #243.
• X-MEN #33 – If nothing else, Brian Wood’s run on this title has featured some beautiful cover art. I have a lot of catching up to do here, but a villain named Mr. Grey has me intrigued.

Ten new books on my list this week. Apparently, Angelique filled some of the blanks while I was away from my computer. See if you can tell which ones.

• AQUAMAN #11 – Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? (Still a few issues behind on this series but I hear Black Manta is involved. I remember enjoying his part in Brightest Day and hopefully Geoff Johns delivers more of that.)
• AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #690 – Spider pig, spider pig, does whatever a spider pig does. Can he fly? No he can’t. That’s because, he’s a pig.
  (Another book I’m behind on. Way behind. Her comments may even be relevant for all I know.)
• ASTONISHING X-MEN #52 – The issue focuses on Karma and according to Dustin Weaver, his cover for this issue was a tough sell with Marvel editorial. I’m hoping to see more of “Inferno Baby” Face who was last seen in Karma’s care.
• AVENGERS #28 -“Avenge me!!!!!!! AVEEEENNNNNNNGGGEEEEE MEEEEEEE!” -Non-spiderman’s dad to that other non-spiderman in that other spiderman movie. (Apparently she’s quoting Norman Osborn from Spider-Man 3. Can’t say I’m looking forward to an AvX issue focused on Red Hulk.)
• THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS #5 – This series has been a welcome surprise and the secret history it’s revealing has more twists and turns to come. Be sure to check out our advance review of this issue.
• SECRET AVENGERS #29 – The AvX tie-ins have wrapped up and this issue gets back to the regular line up for the team. Plus another Art Adams cover!
• UNCANNY X-FORCE #28 – The current arc on this series is taking some bold strides and it looks like we’ll be seeing some time travel in this issue complete with Cable and Hope.
• WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #14 – In the midst of AvX, Kitty goes on a date? With the guy who may have delivered the killing blow to a character last issue? Here’s hoping the solicit (and cover) are deliberately misleading and silly.
• X-MEN: LEGACY #270 – Rogue vs. Ms. Marvel. I’m surprised Angelique left this one alone.
• X-TREME X-MEN #1 – Seeing the “X-Treme” title repurposed brings back some mixed emotions from the Chris Claremont series. Greg Pak’s alternate universe story from Astonishing X-Men that serves as the foundation for this series featured some fun elements, but even though I’m not sure it merits its own title I will give it a shot.

Jonathan Hickman and Nick Pitarra’s The Manhattan Projects always leaves me with a lot of questions. Chief among them: How does this series keep getting better? Issue #4 featured an encounter between the Projects‘ scientists and some unexpected and unfriendly extraterrestrials, and issue #5 gives a clear indication of how far this story can go. It’s clear things are moving into uncharted territory, but in actuality Hickman has been leading us there all along. The universe should be very afraid.

Nine new books on my list this week.

• AVENGERS ACADEMY #33 – I’m honestly looking forward to the AvX tie in ending here. It isn’t that I’m not enjoying the story, this is just a title that feels like one too many.
• AVENGERS VS. X-MEN #8 – I love the way this series has picked up, but at the same time it feels like something big needs to happen here. The Phoenix Five aren’t likely to be the final threat and as the series transitions from Olivier Coipel to Adam Kubert it’s safe to expect there will be another fundamental shift in the balance of power.
• CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 – This relaunch sort of evolves from the Secret Avengers tie ins to AvX, but it seems an odd time for a new series with Marvel Now on the schedule. Regardless I’m happy to see the former Ms. Marvel back in the spotlight now that it’s been some time since her last series ended. Hopefully writer Kelly Sue DeConnick can do right by her.
• JUSTICE LEAGUE #11 – I’m a few issues behind on this series and found myself unable to locate #10 when I tried to catch up.
• NEW MUTANTS #46 – I’m way behind but it’s been announced that this is the title’s final arc so catching up won’t be an uphill battle.
• SAGA #5 – Expectations were high for Brian K. Vaughan’s (Y – The Last Man, Ex Machina, Runaways) new series and it’s safe to say it’s a hit. There are certainly elements that don’t appeal to me, but I am becoming invested in these characters and their struggles.
• UNCANNY X-MEN #16 – This series has seen the best of the AvX tie ins. Though it got some serious competition from the Iron Fist story in New Avengers.
• X-FACTOR #240 – A story focusing on Layla Miller before the series heads into an arc that will change everything starting in #241. Peter David joked that the series was ending, but I’m not so sure it’s a joke.
• X-MEN #32 – It hasn’t been announced that the now Brian Wood penned series is ending, but it’s just a matter of time. This title felt superfluous from the moment it was first announced.
