REVIEW: Batman #21 Zero Year Part One

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

Batman_2011_21_Zero_HourIt’s been a while since we’ve talked, but a week where both Batman and Superman are at the top of my reading list must mean something special. Superstar writer Scott Snyder has been delivering on every level with his New 52 Batman along with Greg Capullo, and they’re launching their next big Batman event “Zero Year” in the same week as Snyder’s high profile debut of Superman Unchained with Jim Lee.

KevinMLD and I have now had a chance to read both books and it’s time to see how they hold up.

My Latest Pull List – June 12th, 2013

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

Weekly comic books are a big part of my life and below is a list of what I’ll be picking up this Wednesday along with cover artwork and previews courtesy of Comixology’s Pull List app.

A relatively small week for me with a couple of huge releases! Seven new books in all including the starts of Batman: Zero Year and Superman Unchained.

  • ASTONISHING X-MEN #63  – Astonishing is one of many titles I’ve fallen behind on in the last few months, but I’ve stuck with buying it. Phil Noto‘s “women of Iceman” cover suggests some interesting happenings inside. I think the Age of Apocalypse version has been running around in this title for the last few months following his time in the previous volume of Uncanny X-Force.
  • BATMAN #21 – I don’t know that I’m seeking another event from Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo‘s Batman, but I’ll take it. The recent two-part Clayface didn’t distinguish itself too favorably in my mind, but their longer format stuff is definitely keeping me around.
  • GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #3 – Steve McNiven‘s art is gorgeous and it looks like there’s some Sara Pichelli in this issue as well! Still on the fence about how long I’ll be continuing with the series, but so far it’s bringing me back.
  • THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS #12 – I’m a few issues behind and I think this might be my last issue until I catch up. It’s a bit hard to believe given how much I was enjoying this story at one point.
  • SUPERMAN UNCHAINED #1Scott Snyder teams with legendary artist Jim Lee to take on DC’s Kryptonian icon just in time for his return to the big screen in Man of Steel. If anyone can do something great with Superman it’s these two and this could be the strongest writer/artist pairing Lee has been part of since joining DC.
  • UNCANNY X-FORCE #6 – This book doesn’t come to mind immediately when I think about the Marvel Now series I’m enjoying most, but it must be near the top of the list because I can’t wait for it to get to what’s next. Bishop, Spiral, the many faces of Fantomex, come on!
  • WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #31 – I’m still way behind on this series and I wanted to catch up before this issue and the start of The Hellfire Saga. At least I have all the issues I haven’t read in one place now.

My Latest Pull List – June 5th, 2013

Weekly comic books are a big part of my life and below is a list of what I’ll be picking up this Wednesday along with cover artwork and previews courtesy of Comixology’s Pull List app.

I’m very excited about the books on my list this week. For the first time in a long time, I’m caught up on everything that’s shipping and enjoying the stories in each title.

  • AGE OF ULTRON #9 – I hate to immediately retract what I just wrote, but I’m not totally into this series and haven’t been at any point. Brain Bendis‘ alternate universe/time-travel story isn’t for me, but one Wolverine stabbing another Wolverine on the cover means potentially one less Wolverine and I’ll take it.
  • ALL NEW X-MEN #12 – I’m thoroughly enjoying this series from Bendis and with an appearance by Havok and the Uncanny Avengers it will be the first book I read this week. The preview suggests it’s going to hit all the right notes once again. I’m thinking the cover showing the older/younger and younger/older Summers brothers locked in battle is deliberately misleading.
  • AVENGERS #13 – I’m always intrigued when the High Evolutionary shows up, and an appearance fits right in with Jonathan Hickman‘s story for this series. Mike Deodato art is a nice plus.
  • CABLE AND X-FORCE #9 – Another appearance by the Uncanny Avengers and the cover suggests a big part for Hope Summers as well. I’m enjoying this series more as it’s progressing and another encounter between Cable and Havok is welcome.
  • X-FACTOR #257 – I just got caught up on the Hell on Earth War over the weekend and I’m looking forward to what The End of X-Factor has in store. The covers for the upcoming issues have some great stuff going on as Peter David closes out the series.
