foursquare: I don’t get it

Posted by under *ambivalent, Technology |

Ok, so many of our readers use foursquare, checking in wherever they go.  I don’t get it.  Why publish when you aren’t home?  What’s the purpose?  I think I get the purpose of Facebook.  It’s like what MySpace used to be, but better.  But foursquare, I have yet to understand you.  I created an account to try and understand, but you still seem useless.

Can any foursquare users out there explain it to me?  And if I get it, then we can be friends and stalk each other on ANOTHER website.

I agree. I think some of it is purely for achievement addicts. It seems to me kind of pointless considering twitter already has geolocation information if you enable it.

    Achievement addicts. LOL

I don’t get foursquare or gowalla, or any of those sites either. I DO, however, post map locations on Twitter if the tweet is pertaining to where I am or if I’d like other people to join me (and it’s a public place).
Otherwise, I think it condones stalking, or helps potential stalkers track places you go to for a “friendly” “coincidental” run-in.

So if no one gets it, how does it have so many users?!

  • JD said,

    well, i like it because
    1. i like to try new places, and if i see that a friend of mine is in a place i don’t recognize, yet it keeps coming up, i’ll ask them about it and voila! might be a new place to go that i didn’t know about. a couple weeks ago, i was driving downtown and happened to pass a place that my friend is always “checking in” at, so i stopped in to see what’s what.

    2. i’m not very hip to what’s happening and when, so just today, a friend logged in at The Piazza downtown, so I messaged him and said “is something cool going down at the piazza?” Turns out there’s a “Farmers Market and Fashion Thing” that i wasn’t aware of. Then he followed it up with “there’s also an art star bazaar at penn’s landing, might check that out too.” so now i know about that as well, and might go check it out later today. see?

    3. i was looking for something to do the other night, and couldn’t think of where to go, when i saw some friends check-in at Kung-Fu Necktie, so i went to join them..

so on and so forth. i was curious about the point of foursquare too, but i’ve noticed that it’s kind of useful in these ways.

Alright, so I’m a new user to Foursquare. I got curious to it because my friend Pete of the blog He Dances For Nickels has been using Foursquare, and so have my other tech-savvy friends. I can’t argue with the “achievement addicts” comment from above, but it’s also kind of a fun “game” so far. I’ve added 3 venues to FourSquare already, one of which may or may not be where I live.

As I’m kicking the tires, I’m finding that all of what JD says above applies to why I like Foursquare so far. I like exploring new things when I can, and giving my opinion. That Tips section on Foursquare is for that. Of course… you could all just have Yelp on your phones, and not have to have a detailed map of the things you’ve done so someone can track you like a serial killer.

Will my love affair last forever? Maybe not, but for now, I’d like to ask ya how, ya like the feel of the bass in your face in the crowd.
