REVIEW: Friends With Benefits

Posted by under *dislike, Movies | Leave a Comment |

I’ve been putting off writing about Friends With Benefits for awhile because I really don’t have anything nice to say about it. Friends is the latest film from Easy A‘s Will Gluck. Gluck tries to present Friends as an atypical romantic comedy, even including a fake romantic comedy film-within-a-film starring Jason Segal and Rashida Jones to point out the stupidity of typical “rom-coms.” In reality, however, this movie still ends up being cliche-ridden, unfunny, and predictable.

REVIEW: Horrible Bosses

Posted by under *mixed, Movies | Leave a Comment |

Horrible Bosses is the new film from Seth Gordon who previously directed the hysterical documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters and the horrendous Vince Vaughn/Reese Witherspoon disaster Four Christmases. The film is carried by a cast of actors mainly known for their television work including Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston along with Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in bit parts. The film benefits from the audience’s previously established affection for the main actors. There’s no way this movie would be nearly as watchable with a cast of unknowns.

REVIEW: Attack the Block

Attack the Block is a new British film written and directed by Joe Cornish and executive produced by Edgar Wright of Shawn of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs the World fame. The story pits teenage London street thugs against an alien invasion. The film made a lot of noise at festivals this Spring, which led to rumors that it would be released with subtitles in the United States due to concerns that Americans would not be able to deal with all the British slang featured in the dialogue. Thankfully, the version I saw was not subtitled and while I may not have understood every bit of dialogue I don’t think it hurt my appreciation of the film. I will mention that there was one Pokémon joke during the movie that I heard repeated aloud by probably five people because the person next to them had missed it the first time.

REVIEW: X-Men: First Class

Posted by under *like, Comics, Movies | Join The Discussion |

It’s impossible to detach myself from my fandom and the fact that I really wanted X-Men: First Class to be a good movie. Despite X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, I believe there’s still hope for Fox’s current X-franchise and First Class went a long way toward confirming that. It’s by no means perfect and there are elements that hurt it, but ultimately I liked it. I had gotten increasingly more anxious/excited to see the movie leading into this weekend and while my initial reaction was full of very mixed feelings, I can say with certainty it’s worth seeing.

Spoilers ahead.

MLD Best Picture Coverage: Winter’s Bone

Posted by under *like, Movies | Leave a Comment |

I get it. The race is over. But there’s still one film MLD had yet to weigh in on at all and that’s Winter’s Bone.

Winter’s Bone is an intense and moody look at a nasty hillbilly town and its culture. It follows a seventeen year old girl, who has been left to take care of her two younger siblings on her own, in her quest to find her missing father as she questions numerous nasty relatives about his whereabouts. The movie isn’t a fun watch but it’s definitely a strong film. In order to qualify for a 2010 Academy Awards nomination, Director Debra Granik made sure to include the requisite amputation scene.

Mostly when I finished watching the movie I couldn’t help but feel like Wayne and Garth had lied to me about it.

127 Hours is still the best film I saw last year.
