My Latest Pull List – September 25th, 2013

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

Six new books on my list this Wednesday.

  • AVENGERS #20 – An Infinity tie-in. I’m thoroughly enjoying all things Infinity. The main series is full of high spots, and the Avengers and New Avengers tie-ins have brought some depth to what the Marvel Universe is going through in its war with the mysterious Builders. The fact that Infinity‘s mastermind, Jonathan Hickman, is writing all of those issues is a big plus. Sticking to the Hickman written chapters is probably best course for me, but I am debating picking up this week’s Avengers Assemble #19 and Nova #8 primarily because of the Infinity logo.
  • BATMAN #23.4 BANE – DC’s Villains Month wraps up for me here. An Batman issue every week was beyond my capacity to keep up. I’ll likely continue with DC’s Forever Evil series that continues over the next six months, but I’m really looking forward to the return of Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, and Zero Year in the pages of Batman, particularly after listening to last week’s Fat Man on Batman podcast.
  • GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #6 – It feels like a lot of time has passed since issue #5 and the continuing introduction of Neil Gaiman’s Angela to the Marvel Universe. I’m not at all sold on the character’s transition from the pages of Image Comics’ Spawn yet, but I’m a fan of the Guardians and I’ll continue to give it a chance.
  • SAGA #14 – Always a great read. After being on hiatus for a few months, I wasn’t crazy about the cliffhanger from issue #12 not being addressed last month but I trust the creative team to provide the right payoff at the right time.
  • UNCANNY AVENGERS #12 – I’m happy this book has gotten onto a regular shipping schedule, and Kang and the Apocalypse Twins are making for a wild story.
  • WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #36 – A Battle of the Atom tie-in. I’m loving the crossover, but I don’t particularly enjoy this series. I caught up on the last 14 issues recently and only about one in four really did anything for me. The preview looks promising though.

I’m also considering checking out IDW’s zombie animal book THE OTHER DEAD #1 this week.

My Latest Pull List – September 18th, 2013

Seven new books on my list this Wednesday.

  • BATMAN #23.3 PENGUIN – I cannot keep up with DC’s Villains Month, but I’m not going to pass up a Frank Tieri Penguin story. At the very least Villains Month is giving different creative teams an opportunity to do an issue of Batman. The Jason Fabok cover looks superb.
  • CABLE AND X-FORCE #14 – This book has taken some interesting turns in the last few issues and the ongoing guest appearance by Havok and the Uncanny Avengers has only helped. My only real complaint is that Hope seems to be making more and more pop culture references that seem completely out of place for a girl raised hundreds of years in the future.
  • CAPTAIN MARVEL #16 – An Infinity tie-in. There are many indications that big things are in store for Carol Danvers during Infinity. I’m a big fan of the character and this could be a big week.
  • INFINITY #3 – I’m enjoying the high stakes cosmic action of the main series, but the Avengers and New Avengers tie-ins really complement the story. I’m also a big fan of how quickly things are moving and shipping even though I just knocked Villains Month for the same thing seven sentences ago.
  • NEW AVENGERS #10 – An Infinity tie-in. Looks like this is going to be a crazy issue where the ongoing plot lines of this title collide with the madness of Infinity.
  • UNCANNY X-MEN #12 – A Battle of the Atom tie-in. This is the first book I’ll read this week. I honestly can’t wait for each chapter of Battle of the Atom. Chris Bachalo‘s return only sweetens the deal.
  • X-MEN: LEGACY #17 – I need to catch up on this series in a big way. Not to judge a book by its cover, but Mike Del Mundo’s cover art continues to impress.

My Latest Pull List – September 11th, 2013

Weekly comic books are a big part of my life and below is a list of what I’ll be picking up this Wednesday along with cover artwork and previews courtesy of Comixology’s Pull List app.

I had six new books on my list this past Wednesday and while I’m just getting to posting after the weekend, I did have a chance to read a few of these while they were at their freshest.

  • ASTONISHING X-MEN #67 – This series is wrapping up with #68 and I will be left with a lot of issues to catch up on. It’s difficult to believe this is the same series Joss Whedon started back in 2004 with all of the starts, stops, delays, and rotating creative teams this book has seen. It’s been worth following, but my main criticism has been its relevance to the rest of the Marvel Universe (or even the X-Men’s corner of that universe!). That has improved under current writer Marjorie Liu, and it will be interesting to see if an announcement of either a Marvel Now relaunch for the series or a new X-ttile for Liu is forthcoming.
  • AVENGERS #19 – An Infinity tie-in. I like the structure for Marvel big Avengers event and while big things are happening in the main series, Avengers and New Avengers have been more in line with what I’m looking for. They’ve handled most of the character moments amidst the cosmic chaos of Jonathan Hickman‘s story and provide a chance to breathe between explosions. This spent a lot of time of Captain Marvel and suggested very bad things might be in store for Also, I thought the cover art for Captain Marvel #15 was great, but this is just amazing.
  • BATMAN #23.2 THE RIDDLER – DC’s Villains Month is overload for me. I don’t always get to read all of my books right away, and “Batman Weekly” is going to put me way behind. I’m skipping the rest of this month’s Justice League issues, but there’s no way I’d skip a Scott Snyder-written issue of this series. I know nothing of Jeremy Haun’s artwork, but Guillem March’s cover looks good.
  • HALO INITIATION #2 – The first issue of the series was decent enough to continue with it, but the real selling point here is Brian Reed’s connection to the video game series and the lead character. Reed wrote both the downloadable Spartan Ops adventures of Halo 4 and the Windows Mobile Halo: Spartan Assault game. Each game features Spartan Sarah Palmer whose origin story is the subject of Initiation.
  • UNCANNY X-FORCE #11 – The return of Bishop has been interesting, but the inclusion of Spiral is another real draw here. I’ll also be looking for the X-Men 50th Anniversary variant of this issue.
  • X-MEN #5 – A Battle of the Atom tie-in. I’m reading and enjoying Marvel’s Infinity and DC’s Forever Evil events (in that order), but Battle of the Atom is the tops for me. I’m a dyed-in-the-wool X-Men fan and completely biased, but it really is good so far. All-New X-Men‘s Chapter 2 was what really sold me on it and having a new installment every week raises my Wednesdays to a new level.

I was on the fence regarding last week’s INFINITY HUNT #1 and MIGHTY AVENGERS #1 debuts, and bought Mighty after a long look at the store.

My Latest Pull List – September 4th, 2013

Weekly comic books are a big part of my life and below is a list of what I’ll be picking up this Wednesday along with cover artwork and previews courtesy of Comixology’s Pull List app.

Ten new books on my list again this Wednesday, but it’s likely I’ll only be bringing seven home.

  • ALL-NEW X-MEN #16 – From nowhere, a crossover! All jokes aside, I am looking forward to Battle of the Atom. It seems the story may be bringing the fate of Brian Bendis‘ time traveling original X-Men into focus. It’s been a real treat to see this version of the characters again, but their presence in the present and the impact on Marvel history needs to be addressed at some point.
  • BATMAN #23.1 (JOKER) – I’m not at all sold on DC’s Villains Month running throughout September or their Forever Evil event that kicks off this week. I probably would have picked up the villain themed issues of the titles I normally follow if there were only one for the month. Seeing that there’s a Justice League and a Batman issue every week in September means I’ll be cutting down to one title (maybe not even that) and it’s Batman.
  • FOREVER EVIL #1 – The publishing schedule for Villains Month may not only drive me away from Justice League, but from Forever Evil as well. David Finch’s art is the only thing that might change that after a look at the issue on Wednesday.
  • INFINITY #2Jonathan Hickman‘s cosmic Avengers event is working for me so far. The tie-ins are fairly limited and I’m curious to see just how critical his Avengers and New Avengers will be to the series.
  • JUSTICE LEAGUE #23.1 (DARKSEID) – I’m listing this, but the more I write this week the more I know there’s no chance I’m getting it.
  • STAR WARS #1 LUCAS DRAFT – A comic book adaptation of George Lucas’ original draft of Star Wars? No choice here, I have to try this. I probably won’t stick around for all 8 issues but it’s absolutely worth at look at #1.
  • TRILLIUM #2 – I enjoyed issue #1 of Jeff Lemire‘s tale of time-crossed lovers, but I think I may revisit this series once it’s collected.
  • X-FACTOR #262 – The end is here. I’m assuming the issue will feature an announcement of what’s next for either the characters or Peter David. Regardless, I’m happy to see a human version of Madrox on the cover.
  • X-MEN: BATTLE OF THE ATOM #1 – A crossover for the X-Men’s 50th anniversary, and I love that it’s a true crossover running weekly through All-New X-Men, X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, and Wolverine and the X-Men rather than an “event” mini-series with tie-ins. It has a lot to live up to for me as a big fan of both Messiah Complex and Second Coming that most recently used this format.
  • X-MEN: LEGACY #16 – Legion vs Cyclops. This should be interesting.
