Girl fighting is “sports entertainment”

carano_v_cyborgI’ve seen my share of contrived fighting, and I think I saw some tonight.  The much hyped (in some circles) fight between Gina Carano and Cris Cyborg was presented by Strikeforce on Showtime tonight and things were definitely suspect.  First of all, the one girl is named Cyborg.  She may as well be part of Techno Team 2000 at that point, because that’s got WWE written all over it.  The fight seemed like it was being stretched for time throughout, and despite my rooting interests was soundly going in favor of the machine-woman.

Then I found myself asking “why would the clock disappear from the screen at the five second mark?” just before the referee called the match in favor of the Cyborg at the moment the horn sounded to end the first round.  I’m really surprised there weren’t twin referees at that point.  Despite the controversy the commentators kept pointing to, the decision stood and a new 145-pound Strikeforce Women’s World Champion was crowned.

I’m sure there will be a rematch, but I honestly hope there isn’t.  Gina “Crush” Carano could be doing so many better things with her time.  I can wait until she gets into some real fake fighting.

Less Than Three Dynasty

I wrote a post last night about how much I was enjoying the ECW program on SciFi recently, but by the end of the night it was no longer relevant in any way.  So, I’ve distilled it down to what I was really focused on and present it here as a replacement.

I’m not going to lie to you, if you have no interest in professional wrestling this post will not be for you.  Indulge me for a moment as I talk about it though.  There’s a lot of this stuff on TV (7-10 hours any given week), and most of it is not very good.  However, I’ve spent a lot of my life as a fan, and I’m very excited about a new group of characters that have come on the scene in World Wrestling Entertainment.

The Hart Dynasty are a new incarnation of some WWF classics that I couldn’t get enough of as a kid:  The British Bulldogs and The Hart Foundation.  This new Hart Dynasty is comprised of David Hart Smith, Natalia Neidhart, and Tyson Kidd.  So, it’s the son of British Bulldogs’ Davey Boy Smith, the daughter of  The Hart Foundation’s Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart, and the last student of the Hart Dungeon wrestling school in Calgary.  Basically, it’s the fusion of my favorite wrestlers from when I was 11.

How could I not love this?  The Hart Dynasty can be seen on Smackdown! beginning this Friday night on MyNetwork  at 8PM.  ECW airs Tuesday nights on SciFi (or is it SyFy now?) at 10PM, but I have no reason to mention that anymore.  And if you’ve read this far here’s a treat.

It’s about time, Comcast.

I was both surprised and delighted to see that Comcast added HD channels for both USA and SciFi to our cable line up this week.  Of course, the areas surrounding Philadelphia had these channels nearly a year ago, but Philadelphia got a new building instead.  When I called to ask about this last February I was told there were bandwidth constraints in the city and the suburban counties didn’t have the same issues.  Regardless, that building may have been instrumental in getting a Phillies World Series Championship so I’ll just focus on that.
