My Latest Pull List – May 29th, 2013

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

Weekly comic books are a big part of my life and below is a list of what I’ll be picking up this Wednesday along with cover artwork and previews courtesy of Comixology’s Pull List app.

Only five this time around.

  • DOCTOR WHO: PRISONERS OF TIME #5 – I’ve been critical of this series’ pacing with each issue essentially being an isolated adventure of a particular incarnation of the Doctor and his companions with little connective tissue to hold the issues together. I don’t expect that to change here, but it will be nice to see “my” Doctor, Peter Davison, again.
  • NEW AVENGERS #6 – This book is just great and I’m enjoying the monthly shipping schedule. It’s allowing Jonathan Hickman‘s story to unfold at a deliberate pace, and every issue has impact. A lot of Marvel Now feels overwhelming with the number of issues that are shipping.
  • UNCANNY X-FORCE #5 – A trip inside Bishop’s mind. It will be interesting to see how far this might go to rehabilitate him after his actions in Messiah Complex and Duane Swierczynski’s Cable series.
  • WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #30 – I’m way behind on this but I’m hoping to catch up before the Hellfire Saga begins next issue.
  • X-MEN #1 – This series has a strong creative team with Brian Wood and Olivier Coipel, and a stronger cast. I’m looking forward to seeing how all of these characters will interact in light if all the Schisms, AvXs, and vampirism that has gone on in recent years.

Triple H wasn’t the only one confused about the ending to last week’s Raw in Kansas City. Hopefully the narrative continues with a bit more coherence tonight in Calgary.

Happy Memorial Day from MLD! A heartfelt thank you goes out to all members of the United States Armed Forces as we remember those who have fallen while serving.

This week’s Raw comes to us from the land where the main export seems to be gifted wrestlers with names like Hart, Pillman and Storm: Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It also happens to be WWE’s officially designated “Bizzaro World” where the heels rule and the good guys can’t catch a break. We’ll surely be treated to a lively crowd, as it has become an essential component to inject some life into a show that has been anything but extreme, despite last week’s show coming off the Extreme Rules pay-per-view. While there were some strong matches during last week’s broadcast, the ending segment ultimately left us puzzled, perplexed, and pondering who’s gunning for the top spots on the roster.

My Latest Pull List – May 1st, 2013

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

Weekly comic books are a big part of my life and below is a list of what I’ll be picking up this Wednesday along with cover artwork and previews courtesy of Comixology’s Pull List app.

Six new books on the list this week. Could be down to four after a closer look at a couple of them at the store today.

  • AGE OF ULTRON #7 – I’m enjoying this series, but it feels like a lot of books have shipped at this point and last issue is where things really started happening. If the pace continues on par with last issue, there’s a chance this could reach a satisfying conclusion with just a few issues to go.
  • ALL NEW X-MEN #11 – This series is the highlight of the Marvel Now line for me, but since it clearly goes hand in hand with Brian Bendis’ Uncanny X-Men the cover gimmick lacks some punch even though it looks great. There could be a surprise in store, but anyone reading both titles knows which of the original X-Men is defecting to Cyclops’ school.
  • AQUAMAN #19 – There’s a good chance I won’t be picking this up. I’m way behind in my reading and I don’t want to continue buying it since I’ve clearly lost some interest. The cover definitely kept it on my list for now.
  • THANOS RISING #2 – Another book I might not be taking home this week. The first issue didn’t really thrill me and the small shipping week is a big part of why I’m still considering it.
  • X-FACTOR #255 – The Hell on Earth War concludes and it was recently announced that the series will be concluding as well. It’s disappointing, but I don’t know that the series would work without Peter David and it sounds like he’s ready to wrap up his story after a long time. The cover art for the few remaining issues takes away a lot of the sting. A reunion of Polaris and Quicksilver? the history of Longshot and Shatterstar? these are stories I can’t wait to read.
  • X-MEN LEGACY #10 – The cover art is brilliant. Hopefully the interior lives up to it.

Monday Night Raw Warm Up for April 29th, 2013

The Undertaker made rare appearances on both Monday Night Raw and Smackdown last week to take on the Shield in London.

Last Monday’s episode of WWE Raw was all about the Undertaker appearing on the show for the first time in three years. The show from London was headlined by Taker teaming with Kane and Daniel Bryan against the Shield in a six-man tag match. Given the momentous nature of Dead Man’s return to WWE’s flagship show, it merits a fare share of attention as we get ready for tonight’s show from Columbus, OH.

My Latest Pull List – April 24th, 2013

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

Weekly comic books are a big part of my life and below is a list of what I’ll be picking up this Wednesday along with cover artwork and previews courtesy of Comixology’s Pull List app.

Ten (maybe eleven) new books on the list for this Wednesday.

  • A+X #7 – Fairly certain issue #6 is where I’m planning to stop with this series, but I’ll give issue #7 a look at the store this week. The Giuseppe Camuncoli Iceman/Thor cover really caught my eye.
  • AVENGERS #10 – The incorporation of elements from the New Universe in this series took me by surprise, but the promise of Omega Flight in this issue somehow feels even more unexpected. As much as I’m anticipating what’s next I’d rank this third of the four Jonathan Hickman written books that made their way onto my pull list for today.
  • EAST OF WEST #2 – This series got off to a great start last month. I’m not really looking to add anything to my list, but this one is tough to pass up especially when it’s “Uncanny Hickman” week. Right now, this book is positioned at number two on the Hictogram.
  • GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #2 – I certainly enjoyed the “point one” issue of Brian Bendis and Steve McNiven’s Guardians series more than issue #1 last month, though the bar was set pretty high. I still have a soft spot for Abnett and Lanning’s previous series, but I have high hopes for where this volume is headed.
  • JUPITER’S LEGACY #1 – A new series from Image by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely. The solicit promises this will be the “the superhero epic that all future comics will be measured by.” I don’t know about all that, but it’s certainly something worth checking out. Millar’s work isn’t always my thing, but I do like Quitely.
  • THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS #11 – I need to catch up on my reading for this title. It fell from the top of my reading list around issue #8 and I’m finding myself missing it. As a result it falls to fourth of this week’s four Hickman titles, but that doesn’t mean it’s anywhere near the bottom of my reading list.
  • NEW AVENGERS #5 – This is honestly my favorite of the Hickman books shipping right now. It has an epic scope and it’s taking the concept of Marvel’s Illuminati into very unpredictable territory. The more conventional shipping schedule helps as I find myself with more time to consider each issue as I wait patiently for the next.
  • UNCANNY AVENGERS #7 – Rick Remender, the Apocalypse Twins, Kang, and Havok. I’m so happy to see this book arriving more regularly and the continuation from Remender’s Uncanny X-Force is an added bonus. This will likely be the first book I read today.
  • UNCANNY X-MEN #5 – Frazer Irving joins Brian Bendis taking the artistic reigns from Chris Bachalo. I’m a big Bachalo fan, but this is a welcome transition if we can’t have him for every issue. Can’t wait to see the fallout from Cyclops’ recruiting efforts at the Jean Grey School.
  • WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #28 – I jumped in for the Age of Ultron tie in last week but I still have a number of issues to catch up on here. I’m contemplating stepping away from the series based on the last few that I’ve read and seeing Jason Aaron‘s recent reintroduction of Dog Logan.
  • X-TERMINATION #2 – Finishing out the alternate timeline crossover. Not much else to say as I haven’t read much of it yet.
