No comics Wednesday

This snow is really starting to cause problems. Apparently Diamond Comic Distributors, who ship the majority of new books on Wednesdays, had no power and no phone as of Monday due to the weekend storm. A recent update says that this outage shouldn’t cause any shipping delays. However, considering the new storm that’s crushing us today, there’s a good chance we won’t see books before next week at this point. Without any books hot off the presses, it’s nice that Marvel has given us some teasers of what’s coming a few months down the line to focus on.

After Marvel’s Siege event wraps up in April, all of the Avengers titles currently being published will end as well. Despite being top sellers, Marvel is ending New, Mighty, Dark and Avengers: The Initiative and relaunching new titles in May. The first book announced simply titled (adjectiveless) Avengers will be written by Siege author and Avengers mastermind Brian Bendis with art by the legendary John Romita, Jr. As part of the announcement, Marvel rolled out the following images each day last week to showcase the team roster of: Captain America, Spider Woman, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and Thor. As I understand it, this is not the full line-up so there could be some surprises yet to come.

A curveball came this week with the start of a set of teasers for a book called Secret Avengers featuring silhouette figures in a similar style as the Avengers images. The really interesting aspect of this is the creative team of artist Mike Deodato, Jr. who currently draws Dark Avengers and writer Ed Brubaker. Brubaker is the creative force behind Captain America and is responsible for his death and rebirth in recent years. This is his first foray with the Avengers franchise and it should be interesting to see how much of the spy thriller element he brings over from his Cap run given the “secret” nature of this book. Deodato’s involvement lead to some interesting possibilities as he has followed the same group of villains posing as heroes from Thunderbolts to Dark Avengers and we could well see some of them in this title.

These images were released throughout the week, and we’ve updated accordingly. I just wish there were some new books I could get to.

Granted DC did the same thing with their new JLA… and the world yawned… but I’m kind of weirded out by Marvel revealing their new Avengers. Especially considering the big event that’s running right now is leading up to the current teams ending. Where’s the suspense? Is that even a goal anymore? Though considering how Marvel treated Captain America, they’ll rush out a first issue with this team and then ignore it the next month.

I agree about the suspense. Announcements like this are all about hype and making sure orders are as high possible for the cut off two months before the books ship. I’m fairly certain this isn’t the full Avengers line up, so there could still be some surprises.

The Secret Avengers stuff does have me intrigued though (and they could have done the same thing with the Avengers teasers). That first one for example, could be anyone from Spider-Man to Venom, Black Panther or Beast. They’re all viable candidates since we have no idea what happens in Siege.

The Captain America stuff was incredibly mishandled. They’re even putting out a book poking fun at it, but I don’t know why anyone would pay for that.

Now while I have no interest in the Avengers team being spoiled, announcing that the new Thunderbolts will include Luke Cage and Man-Thing. That’s crazy enough to be awesome.

The Thunderbolts announcements were crazy, but I don’t think it’s going to get me to try the book.

As I said, I didn’t mind the Avengers teases revealing some of the team, because I knew there were still some characters to be revealed. Then the cover to Avengers #1 was posted on Bendis’ Facebook page Friday and revealed two more. Wish they would have left it at these reveals.

I do like the Secret Avengers ones since it provides something to speculate on. I’m thinking the team is Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Marvel Boy, War Machine and Steve Rogers.
