Cramming Oscar Season into Just Two Days

Posted by under *like, Movies |

I’ve never been one to rush out and see Oscar nominated films in the theater even though in the end I tend to prefer smaller, artsier films to Hollywood’s typical factory-produced sequel. I guess it’s just when the time comes to spend the money for a night at the movies, I’d rather see something that demands the larger screen and sound system. Of course this just encourages Hollywood to make Transformers 4 and we all lose.

This year AMC Theaters are offering a unique opportunity to catch up on those films that were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture that we might have missed. Over the next two weekends select AMC theaters will be offering two “Best Picture Showcases”; each featuring five of the movies up for the Academy’s top prize for just $35. In addition, attendees will receive a ten dollar AMC gift card to use on food.

Considering that it breaks down to like $5 a movie plus a fun Saturday, it is just too good of an opportunity to pass up. I’ll be attending the event this Saturday for a line up that includes:

Toy Story 3
127 Hours
The Kids Are Alright
True Grit
The Fighter

The only other nominated flicks I’ve seen were The Social Network and Inception, so Saturday’s line up is pretty close to perfect. The only way it could be better is if Kids was swapped with Black Swan.

Anyway, I have no idea if tickets remain for the events either week, but if this sounds as appealing to you as it does to me then it might be worth looking into. AMC is also running a one day festival showing all ten nominated films in some areas on February 26th. Unfortunately, Philadelphia is not one of those areas. More information on the event is available here.

If you go, you’ll recognize me. I’ll be the one hiding in the corner next to his wife who is playing Tiny Chef on her iPhone. Yeah, she can’t sit through a single two hour movie. There’s no way she’ll survives five. Hopefully the event lives up to my lofty expectations and my butt (and my wife) forgive me for this grueling experience someday.
