Standard Deviations vol. 8
X-Men: Messiah Complex

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

In the last edition of Standard Deviations, we took a look at a set of variant covers for Marvel’s House of M series released in 2005. The Scarlet Witch was a central figure in that series as she will be in this year’s Avengers versus X-Men. Also central to AvX  is Hope Summers, the first mutant born since the Witch’s “no more mutants” curse. In the interest of equal time, this go around we’ll be taking a look the variant covers that shipped with 2007’s Messiah Complex, the story that introduced Hope to the Marvel Universe. The story stands as an important part of X-history and a who’s who of top artists turned in some beautiful cover artwork for the thirteen-part crossover.

Standard Deviations vol. 2:
Avengers X-Sanction variant covers

Posted by under *mixed, Comics | Leave a Comment |

Wednesday saw the release of Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness’s Avengers: X-Sanction #1 (look for our review of the issue here). The book features the return of the X-Men’s Cable that was teased at this year’s San Diego Comic Con and is the first appearance of the character after his noble death during X-Men: Second Coming. As a fan of Cable, I have very mixed feelings about his resurrection, but with the recent announcement of next Summer’s blockbuster Avengers vs. X-Men series this series’ importance has seemingly increased. As a high profile book, Marvel has seen fit to ship seven different covers for the first issue ranging in price from its $3.99 cover price to over $200 from Midtown Comics’ online store.

More variants are planned for each issue of the series and we’ll have updates here they ship.

REVIEW: Generation Hope #13 (X-Men Regenesis)

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

James Asmus’ first issue of Generation Hope taking over for Kieron Gillen (who gave fans permission to buy the book since he didn’t have any of his own on the shelf this week) manages to strike a nice balance familiarizing readers with the principal characters and their mission, bringing new characters into the mix, and launching the team into their first adventure following Schism. Ibraim Roberson also enters as the book’s regular artist and all told the Regenesis rebranding has been very good to this title.

Spoilers for Generation Hope #13 will follow.

REVIEW: New Mutants #33 (X-Men Regenesis)

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

There are a lot of good things happening with this book both inside and out. All of the X-titles have new logos on their covers as part of X-Men: Regenesis courtesy of designer Jared Fletcher. This was the first time I’d really looked at his New Mutants logo and I like it a lot, particularly the alignment of the “W” and “M” and the incorporation of an “X.” I also appreciated the “moving” theme of Jason Pearson’s cover image coming out of X-Men: Schism and its slight misdirection.

Spoilers for New Mutants #33 will follow.

Women of Marvel Djurdjevic variants

Posted by under *like, Comics | Join The Discussion |

Marvel Comics is celebrating the women of their publishing line this year with a series of Women of Marvel promotions. In a similar manner to their 70th anniversary celebration in 2009, Marvel is releasing a year long series of variant covers on selected titles. Last year’s cover variants were created by one of their top artists, Marko Djurdjevic (check them out here). The 2010 Women of Marvel covers are being provided by Marko’s wife Jelena Kevic Djurdjevic. While these images are equally stunning, they do not appear to be shipping on the same schedule as last years books. Many are covers for limited series rather than regular titles and this may be interfering with them being released monthly. Regardless, the real shame is that these books aren’t really showing up on the shelves for people to enjoy.
