REVIEW: Green Lantern #64War of the Green Lanterns Part One

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

On some level, I feel like I’m following the cosmic adventures of the Green Lantern having read Blackest Night and Brightest Day. However, after getting my hands on the first part of the War of the Green Lanterns crossover I’ve come to realize that I’m just keeping up with Earthbound aftermath of what Hal Jordan and company are actually up to. The prelude issue to this story, Green Lantern #63, was a great primer for the current threat of Krona and his bid to destroy the Guardians of the Universe, and it was very satisfying to get back to a book featuring the various Lanterns writer Geoff Johns’ has introduced in the last few years.

REVIEW: Age of X: Chapter 4 (New Mutants #23)

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

Age of X: Chapter 4 hit the shelves yesterday and it’s another fantastic installment of Mike Carey’s mysterious X-Men saga. Within its pages, we finally learn what happened to the world we know, but the revelation is so over the top crazy that it only raises new questions about who could have done it and how. With two chapters remaining in this crossover, the timing and nature of the reveals here are pitch perfect as things really start to escalate.

Spoilers for the issue and series will follow.

The State of the Avengers – Spring 2011

Last year we spent some time talking about the relaunch of Marvel’s Avengers line here at MLD. These series introduced the publisher’s new Heroic Age that introduced new lineups, new creative teams and new threats. It was a good time to give all of these titles a shot. Some of the books really captured my attention, others did not, but they all have their appeal. As we gear up for this year’s Fear Itself crossover, the books are wrapping their current arcs and headed for some changes that make now a good time to revisit them.

Some spoiling may occur.

REVIEW: Green Lantern #63

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

I don’t normally read DC’s Green Lantern title, but I should. Throughout Blackest Night and Brightest Day, it consistently seems like Geoff Johns’ Green Lantern series has been where the stories I’m most interested in are unfolding. Couple that with the fact that this book is ultimately the source for those event titles and there’s no reason not to pick it up.

Issue #63 is billed as a prologue to the War of the Green Lanterns crossover that begins tomorrow in Green Lantern #64 and continues into Green Lantern Corps #58 which should be sitting right next to it on the new release shelf. The real upside to this story is that it’s a true crossover rather than a miniseries with a host of spinoffs.

REVIEW: Xombi #1

Posted by under *dislike, *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

Last week saw the relaunch of DC’s Xombi series with a new #1 issue by writer John Rozum and artist Frazer Irving. The debut issue has been getting positive attention from a number of outlets, but it was an MLD reader request that got us to take a closer look at the book. It’s not something either of us would have normally picked up, but I think it’s fair to say we both enjoyed it.

Spoilers for the issue will follow.

KevinMLD: Xombi is a character that I don’t have much previous exposure to. I know he was created as part of DC’s Milestone line in the mid ’90s by the writer of the current relaunch of the character, John Rozum.
