REVIEW: The True Story of WrestleMania

Posted by under *like, Television | Leave a Comment |

World Wrestling Entertainment’s The True Story of WrestleMania is available now through Netflix Instant (though the physical DVD is not yet shipping). It’s certainly something I wanted to see, but to be honest there’s no way I would have had a chance to anytime soon without this being available through Netflix. Only Volume 1 of the multi-disc set is currently streaming, but this is the documentary portion of the release while the other volumes are filled with matches. With a running time of just over 2 hours, the documentary features some incredible footage from the early ’80s and was a really nice way to revisit my youth, particularly with this year’s WrestleMania just two weeks away.

MLD Recommends: Being Human

Posted by under *like, Television | Leave a Comment |

So a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost walk into a bar…

All I kept thinking while watching the pilot episode of the American version of Being Human, which airs on Syfy, was that the basic premise of the show should be a bad joke or silly sitcom from the Sixties. In the new series, a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost all come to reside in the same apartment as they struggle to hang onto their humanity and look towards each other for support. All they needed to do was throw in a zombie or a creature from some dark lagoon and hilarity would surely ensue. Instead, the series has proven surprisingly intense for Syfy; a network better known for bad made-for-TV/DVD movies like Mega Snake than compelling series. Dave Maietta, sci fi fan and guitarist from Bleed Radio Bleed, joins MLD for a discussion of the show.

WWE’s 2011 Royal Rumble

Posted by under *like, Television | Leave a Comment |

I know it’s silly, but I’m a long time pro wrestling fan. I’ve been losing interest lately, but last night’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view may have turned all that around. It was a fun show that really showcased the Rumble itself, which is usually the most exciting match of the year. There was a new twist on the Rumble match, a couple of very surprising old favorites returning, but it was the current roster and what they did in the ring that made the show great.

REVIEW: Doctor Who – A Christmas Carol

Posted by under *like, Television | Leave a Comment |

This is probably the best of the Doctor Who Christmas episodes since the show’s return in 2005. Of course, I’m ignoring last year’s epic two-parter in that assessment, but that wasn’t so much a Christmas story as the others. This year’s episode took me a bit by surprise because after hearing it billed as A Christmas Carol, I automatically assumed the worst. I’m happy to say that Steven Moffat proved those assumptions wrong in every way imaginable, and I didn’t have to suffer through an insufferable Tiny Tim at all. I’ll be the one spoiling Christmas from here out, so consider this a warning.

Christmas Day with Doctor Who

Posted by under *like, Television | Join The Discussion |

It really is Christmas this year as the annual Doctor Who Christmas Special will air on December 25th in the U.S. on BBCAmerica. The only downside is that my local television signal provider does not carry that channel in high definition. This is minor since I won’t have to wait even one day to see what’s in store for The Doctor, Rory Campbell and Amy Pond this year, but still it would be nice.
