REVIEW: Brightest Day #22

Posted by under *mixed, Comics | Leave a Comment |

DC Comic’s Brightest Day series is down to it’s final issues and the last individual story of the resurrected heroes from Blackest Night wraps up in issue #22. Firestorm confronts his Black Lantern analog, Deathstorm, and the cosmic Anti-Monitor with everything in Ronnie Raymond and Jason Rusch’s lives on the line. This was probably the second most interesting storyline of the series for us behind Deadman’s saga. Read on to see how it holds up compared to the recently concluded stories of Aquaman, the Hawkpeople, and the Martian Manhunter.

Spoilers ahead.

REVIEW: Age of X: Chapter 3 (X-Men: Legacy #246)

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

Marvel’s Age of X hit the midway point this week with the release of X-Men: Legacy #246. The mystery of this strange new world deepens and we see some heavy hitters step into the foreground. The book is a solid 4 out of 5 and writer Mike Carey’s latest X-Men masterpiece is really commanding my attention.

Spoilers to follow.

The issue sports another great Lenil Yu cover featuring the Age of X versions of the New Mutants (Cypher, Magma, Karma, Dust, Moonstar and Eclipse/Sunspot). The team spends most of the issue hunting down Legacy (Rogue), who has learned that all is not what is seems in their world. While the suspense and action is great here, what struck me most about the book is how much I’m enjoying the small details that seem to reflect moments from X-Men history.

REVIEW: Brightest Day #21

Posted by under *mixed, Comics | Leave a Comment |

Brightest Day heads into its final four issues last week and we’re seeing a lot of characters coming together now that they’re done with their subplots that had little to do with the main story of the series. Martian Manhunter is the focus of the issue in his battle with the other last Martian in the universe, D’Kay, but there are also appearances by a host of Justice League members including Superman and Batman. Some of the other resurrected characters from Blackest Night show their faces as well, and we get some questions as to what’s in store for Hawk, Jade and the ones we haven’t seen the White Ring use Deadman to collect.

Also, PTB has a baby in his house.

Spoilers to follow.

MMXI: Marvel’s Year of the X-Men begins this May

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

When Marvel’s May solicitations appeared earlier this month a group of books were very conspicuous by their absence. Four X-Men titles (Uncanny X-Men, X-Men: Legacy, New Mutants, and Uncanny X-Force) had no listings and it was clear that something was up. Last week Marvel released a set of teaser images for these titles and they’re giving more details all this week on Marvel.com. Every day at 3PM Marvel will host a series of “liveblogs” focusing on what they’re calling MMXI: Year of the X-Men featuring X-editor Nick Lowe and the creators behind each of these titles kicking off yesterday with New Mutants.

REVIEW: Age of X: Chapter 2 (New Mutants #22)

Posted by under *like, Comics | Leave a Comment |

Age of X: Chapter 2 shipped side by side with Chapter 1 last week and while I’m confused by this publishing decision, I did enjoy the instant gratification. After what felt like a long time waiting for these books after the information blitz leading up to the series, I’m very satisfied with how things are unfolding. Chapter 1 introduced a new world for the familiar mutants of the X-Men line along with a host of mysteries and Chapter 2 really moved things forward.

Spoilers for the series will follow.
