Less Than Three Dynasty

I wrote a post last night about how much I was enjoying the ECW program on SciFi recently, but by the end of the night it was no longer relevant in any way. So, I’ve distilled it down to what I was really focused on and present it here as a replacement.

I’m not going to lie to you, if you have no interest in professional wrestling this post will not be for you. Indulge me for a moment as I talk about it though. There’s a lot of this stuff on TV (7-10 hours any given week), and most of it is not very good. However, I’ve spent a lot of my life as a fan, and I’m very excited about a new group of characters that have come on the scene in World Wrestling Entertainment.

The Hart Dynasty are a new incarnation of some WWF classics that I couldn’t get enough of as a kid: The British Bulldogs and The Hart Foundation. This new Hart Dynasty is comprised of David Hart Smith, Natalia Neidhart, and Tyson Kidd. So, it’s the son of British Bulldogs’ Davey Boy Smith, the daughter of The Hart Foundation’s Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart, and the last student of the Hart Dungeon wrestling school in Calgary. Basically, it’s the fusion of my favorite wrestlers from when I was 11.

How could I not love this? The Hart Dynasty can be seen on Smackdown! beginning this Friday night on MyNetwork at 8PM. ECW airs Tuesday nights on SciFi (or is it SyFy now?) at 10PM, but I have no reason to mention that anymore. And if you’ve read this far here’s a treat.

I’m even following Jimmy Fallon on Twitter

When Conan O’Brien took over The Tonight Show this month, we decided to record it and see what he was up to. We’re Conan fans, so we had some built in interest. As part of the deal, we added Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to the recording schedule as well.

We had watched Late Night during Jimmy’s first week back in March, but hadn’t paid any attention since. I can’t speak for Angie (or anyone else here), but I can’t get enough of the show. I enjoyed the first week, but it’s just gotten so much better and Jimmy Fallon seems much more natural in his hosting role. Even more compelling than that is the fact that the humor is just how I like it, and the content really appeals to me. No other talk show that I’m watching has segments on the Palm Pre and Apple’s iPhone 3GS, or demonstrates the XBox360 Natal. Tonight he‘s playing Tiger Woods on the Wii in Times Square! I’d go so far as to say this stuff isn’t on anyone in television’s mind outside of G4 and one or two other niche basic cable shows.

Bottom line, I’m hooked on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The Roots‘ contributions as the show’s house band don’t hurt, nor does the drama of the Late Night reality show, 7th Floor West.

In Papa We Trusted

Anyone growing up in the Delaware Valley during the last 25 years or so, and who watched Channel 6 ABC, is feeling the same distraction I am right now: the sadness at the passing of veteran sportscaster Gary Papa.

I could say more here, but I’ve already said it in my regular blog. Read it, please. Mr. Papa would have wanted it that way.

Post-premiere let-downs

So I think in order of post premier let downs it goes: Battlestar Galactica>24>Lost. All of the premiers were pretty good, but BSG was a total snoozefest the next week, 24 was good but not as good, and Lost was as good if not better

Battlestar Galactica is going into their final (10?) episodes, and this of course raises the stakes for every hour. Especially since they’ve auctioned off all of their props and costumes so it’s too late to go back. I don’t think my expectations were set too high for its return since I thoroughly enjoyed the premiere. The next week, not so much. It was a good episode, but a little too slow (Angie fell asleep and I didn’t bother to wake her).

The year off really seems to have helped 24. The first four hours were non-stop action and the first hour after the two-night marathon premiere showed no signs of things slowing down. So, if we can get through Day 7 without any bouts of amnesia or Kim Bauer being chased by a mountain lion and Kevin Dillon, this could be the best season yet.

Much like the other premieres, the return of Lost really delivered. I honestly can’t believe the complexity of some of the storytelling they use on this show. I think this is due more to the fact that I assumed a network show wouldn’t go for that level of non-linear delivery. Regardless, I had a great time getting back into this show.

Update: I didn’t think I was going to see the third episode of Battlestar Galactica before this published, but it completely changes the equation. Action-packed with high spots throughout. Week two seems like a complete aberration in light of this.
