Super Bowl XLIVe

Posted by under *mixed, Sports | Leave a Comment |

While a number of Super Bowl parties were going on today, the two+ feet of snow that fell this weekend kept us home for the game.  As a result, I’m essentially alone with my thoughts since Angie hates football with a passion.  I will now inflict them on you.

MLD Best of 2009

Posted by under *like, Miscellany | Leave a Comment |

Yes, this is “late” by most standards, but in our defense we had a lot of tough choices to make from last year. Some choices were so tough that we had a number of ties and double entries.  One category had to be completely eliminated due to an inability for some of us to make a decision (When I asked Kevin for his favorite book from 2009, he replied “books are for nerds”).

I think it’s fair to say that everyone here really enjoyed The Hangover, Star Trek and UP! (along with most of the world) as they were under consideration on all of our lists. Angie and I just got around to seeing The Departed late last year, and while I loved it, I couldn’t pick it as a best of 2009 since it was released in 2006.

Better Off Ted and Modern Family appeared on more than one list as close seconds for favorite TV show. While Super Mario Bros. Wii and Wii Sports Resort were definite favorite video games, particularly for Matt and Angie.  Although KevinMLD has become one of the top players in world in iGems, I hear he’s still playing the free version of the game.

Let us know what your Best of 2009 lists look like (especially if you’ve read any good books), and feel free to offer suggestions of good stuff you’re finding in 2010.

What about us, Nebraska?

Posted by under *dislike, Miscellany | Join The Discussion |

After looking at our visitor logs over the last year, I feel I have to do something about a group of states that never visit. You know who you are…well, you really don’t know who you are, do you…

Nebraska, when we flew over you last week the pilot said there would be turbulence. At least your air space is mildly exciting. We descended to avoid it, so I may have been closer to you than ever before.

While I’ve never been on the ground in Nebraska, driving through was once described to me as a being on a ribbon of concrete with nothing on either side, and a dip around Omaha.

I know Nebraska has big college sports teams, but I know little to nothing about college sports. There are just so many conferences with seemingly no organization, featuring teams I could never possibly be interested in…like Nebraska. It also doesn’t help that you’re triple land-locked, and have a Republican River (in the interest of equal time, I wouldn’t visit Jackass Flats, AZ either).

And really, Worms, Nebraska? How exactly does a town get such a name?

I do love Abe Lincoln though, so I’ll give you respect for that. Illinois gets more though because a state motto trumps a capital any day.  So Nebraskans, put off your Arbor Day planning, drink the Kool-Aid, and pay us a visit.

Wait! The Others have a Lazarus Pit? (LOST SPOILERS AHEAD)

Posted by under *mixed, Television | Join The Discussion |

The following discussion took place via Facebook over the last 24 hours. Some of the comments have been reordered for clarity’s sake.

Kevinmld: The Others have a Lazarus Pit?

On the Others versus the Hostiles and vice versa

Ryan H: They are the hostiles, Kev.  The others are a different group altogether.

Katie D: I thought the Dharma group was the “others”. Richard’s group was the “hostiles”. Then Ben killed off all the dharma folk & became part of Richard’s group. But then Ben tried to make the “hostiles” more like the “others” if that makes sense. Because I remember Season 3 there was tension in the ranks with Richard & Ben. At least that was my understanding.

Kevinmld: I’m not convinced. When we first saw the others running around in season one, weren’t they running around in rags and barefeet. I seem to remember their feet not touching the ground or something… but it’s been so many years I may be making that part up. I think it’s one group… Or they were one group in the past.

Ryan H: Kev, those others took the kids. The kids you saw today.

Jay H: Ben and Richard were a part of The Hostiles. They def wore the rags before. At some point, Ben rose to power, split off and slaughtered the Dharma Initiative. “The Others” is the name branded by the plane survivors for Ben and his people who lived in Dharmaville.

Katie D: Ben had to kill the Dharma folks in order to become part of Richard’s group.

Shawn H: i thought it was awesome when the guys were all like “oh nos don’t drown him in the magic hot tub.” asian dude shoulda been like “oh i’m sorry is your magical hot tub different than mine?”

MLD Mobile Edition

Posted by under *mixed, Technology | Leave a Comment |

In another effort to improve the MLD experience, we’re excited to introduce a new mobile edition of the site.  You may be looking at it right now.

The navigation is streamlined allowing easy browsing of posts on your phone.  The downside is some of the graphics and category functions are lost, but that streamlining is sort of the point of a mobile site.  A link to switch back to the standard browser version of the site appears at the bottom of each page.  Check it out, and please let us know what you think.
