REVIEW: The Expendables

Posted by under *mixed, Movies | Leave a Comment |

The Expendables is exactly what you would imagine it to be if you were to really take a minute to think about it and let those initial nice feelings rooted in nostalgia pass. It’s a 80’s action movie revival written and directed by Sylvester Stallone and starring Stallone, Dolph Lundgren and Mickey Rourke. The movie is overloaded with ultraviolence and shaky camera shots because that’s what Stallone thinks is relevant in 2010. That’s not to say it’s not a fun movie. It is. It has a few fun action scenes and its share of laughs. It’s just not the magic action movie that the Internet hype wants you to believe it is.

REVIEW: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

In a freak occurrence, Pete and I got to see Scott Pilgrim vs The World last week. Go sneak previews! Not only did we think we wouldn’t have any chance of getting into the 7PM (assumed time) screening, we had reserved seating for the 7:30PM (actual time) screening. It pays to know the right people! Thank you, Steve D!

The best part for me about going to screenings, besides the cost, is the lack of previews. We hung out in the theater for a bit, the lights dimmed, and we were immediately in love with the movie. Tiny spoiler here, but we’ll try to not ruin much else. Universal logo on the screen. Pixelated. 8-bit MIDI music. Awesome. We both agree on that point, and here’s what else we have to say.

LydonReviews Dinner for Schmucks

Last night after a dinner in Langhorne, PA at Jimmy Buffet’s Cheeseburger in Paradise, which warrants a post about crappy cover bands (a topic I know a thing or two about as PTB and KevinMLD will surely remember from my previous Diary of a Bass Player column from the old Break Even site), my wife and I saw Dinner for Schmucks, the American remake of the French movie The Dinner Game, itself based on the French play, Le Diner de Cons, both written by Francis Veber. Thanks for the info, Wikipedia! You make me look smart! Oh, and for those that don’t speak French, the translated titled apparently DOES mean “Dinner for Idiots”.

Who knew? (French people, probably)

Our Latest Distraction: Inception

Posted by under *like, Movies | Join The Discussion |

Over the last week many of us at MLD took the opportunity to see Christopher Nolan’s film Inception. We’ve been very eager to have a spoiler-filled discussion, but wanted to give other people time to see it first. We all have a very fundamental disagreement about what even happens in the movie, and a line has been drawn in the sand about it. If you’ve seen it, please let us know whose side you’re on. If you see it this weekend, what took you so long? But you need to take a side as well. Note, the discussion below features tons of spoilers not just about Inception, but Memento, The Prestige, and The Dark Knight as well. You’ve been warned.

REVIEW: Inception

Posted by under *like, Movies | Join The Discussion |

Inception is the best movie so far this year.  While that may not be a very high hurdle to jump, it is as good as some of the top movies of last year (Inglourious Basterds) and the year before (Slumdog Millionaire).   It is pretty close to a perfect movie, although not quite the perfect action movie (Die Hard)…oh well.  It may not be this good in repeat viewings, but I cannot imagine a movie better suited for repeat viewings than Inception.  No doubt in my mind, I will be there to watch it on an IMAX screen.
