The State of the Green Lanterns – Winter 2011

Posted by under *like, Comics, Movies | Leave a Comment |

Let me start off by saying that I’ve always thought Green Lantern was a terrible character. When I was a kid I totally would have taken Aquaman and his ability to talk to his fish friends over Green Lantern’s stupid magic ring and glowing fists. It’s terrible, and Hal Jordan’s lack of a personality never helped things. So if you were to tell me there would come a day that I’d be reading three monthly Green Lantern titles and really enjoying them, I’d have thought you were crazy. It’s a HUGE tribute to Geoff Johns’ writing ability that Green Lantern was ever even an exciting title; let alone soaring at the heights it hit during the Sinestro Corps War and the lead up to Blackest Night. Blackest Night didn’t really work for me overall. The Black Lanterns were mostly annoying rather than horrifying. The tie-ins all told the exact same story, but the series still had some really nice moments such as Lex Luthor becoming an Orange Lantern, the Scarecrow joining the Sinestro Corps, and Sinestro himself being the first to wield the white ring. Which leads us to today and the question we are now faced with: What is the current state of the Green Lanterns?

REVIEW: Black Swan – more than just hot girls kissing and dancing

Last night, after sitting through what seemed like interminable CYO basketball games, the wife and I got to eat at Friendly’s (Kickin’ Buffalo Chicken and a Reese’s Pieces Sundae, thank you) and went to the movies to see Black Swan, the new Darren Aronofsky movie. Let me begin by saying that if you didn’t like Requiem for a Dream and want to dismiss the rest of Aronofsky’s films, go ahead, but you’ll be missing a film that has an almost perfect mix of crazy, funny and creepy with brilliant performances to boot.

Throughout December I was inundated with all manner of media related to Disney’s TRON: Legacy, the sequel to the 1982 classic TRON. This is ok, I’m a fan, but there was so much TRON in my life all month it would be wrong not to mention it here. Seeing the movie was just the tip of the iceberg. There’s also music, comic books and video games of all kinds, which is appropriate since the original TRON Arcade game may have actually been more popular than the first movie.

REVIEW: True Grit

Posted by under *like, Movies | Leave a Comment |

Sometimes a trailer ruins a movie. All the best action scenes, the big CGI set pieces, and the funniest lines are packed into a 150 second package. Other times the studio’s marketing department will make a movie look completely different through a trailer. The movie looks like a fantasy action-adventure movie, but after four hours you are left with The Fellowship of the Rings. You feel betrayed. The commercials and trailer for True Grit show gunfights, old fashioned stand offs, and big time talk. What is missing from the trailer is the humor.

HP7 – 7 Short Reviews

Posted by under *mixed, Movies | Leave a Comment |

Everyone is going to write up Harry Potter reviews. Not me. I didn’t read the books, so I don’t have much to say about the movie compared to what others would. It was fun. It was long. It was scary. It is weird that those little kids are adults.

Instead, I’ll review the trailers that played before the movie, since I was still completely awake at that point.

Green Hornet/Green Lantern – If I am going to see one green movie in 2011, it is going to be Green Hornet. It looks fun and it looks like it is meant to be fun. Green Lantern looks like it can’t decide what it wants to be. Read more of this article »
