2010 NBA Finals Game 7

Posted by under *dislike, Sports | Leave a Comment |

And so it comes down a deciding game seven in the NBA Finals this year between the league’s two most successful franchises. The Lakers and Celtics have won 32 of the league’s 63 NBA Championships between them, and that’s enough for me to not care at all about this year’s finals. Any and all rooting interest I had was lost back in November when it was clear the Sixers weren’t going anywhere.

In preparation for tonight, check out all of this season’s NBA posts here on My Latest Distraction. You’ll notice a pattern that has nothing at all to do with Boston, Los Angeles, or any other team that made the playoffs this year.

The last game of the NBA post-season airs tonight on ABC at 9PM EST. Congratulations to whichever team wins. You did it again!

You’re very welcome, Cleveland.

So let’s be honest… some fans in Cleveland may have been a little upset that the Indians traded their best player, Cliff Lee, to Philadelphia last year just in time for the Phillies’ unsuccessful World Series title defense. The trade turned out to be Philadelphia just renting out Lee for that playoff run, before shipping him off to Seattle for way less than the Indians got for him.

Cleveland fans may have felt like they didn’t get enough in return for Lee, but that argument should end tonight. Because tonight that trade saved the Indians from the ultimate humiliation of being “perfect gamed,” when former Phillies’ prospect and current Indian Jason Donald avoided being the 27th straight out recorded by some nobody Detroit Tigers pitcher. Donald achieved this by barely beating out an infield single. Read more of this article »

Quick, while the Flyers are still relevant

Alright, NHL…I try not to be so critical of you but more often than not, I just don’t get you. I never understood ties, I still don’t understand why you use points rather than wins and losses, and I don’t know why you’re letting your championship series be split between broadcast TV and basic cable.

I know it was tough to get a TV contract for your product, and Versus came through for you. It’s an NBC network, so I get that they’d have the option to broadcast your games on the parent network. Why air games 1 and 2 on NBC and then 3 and 4 switch to Versus? This is not right for your fans, even the casual ones that really just want to see the finals.

The ratings were actually pretty high for game 1, but the series could end in one of the Versus games (obviously, I don’t want this to happen as a Flyers fan). I can’t believe that doesn’t cut into your viewership, and ultimately hurt your league.

My first Glee

There was a ton of hype around Glee when it first started.  I think I wanted to watch it in the beginning.  Maybe we had recordings that conflicted.  Either way, I didn’t.  I think maybe we tried to watch once, but didn’t make it through the episode.  It’s been officially picked up for a 3rd season by Fox, and I just watched my first full episode.

My viewing was inspired by the inclusion of Lady Gaga.  Well, the inclusion of her music.  Gossip Girl had THE Lady Gaga.  Just saying, Glee, just saying….  So I watched.  A whole episode.  Not impressed.  The singing was not believable.  Over produced?  Under-produced?  I’m not sure which one.  But it seemed like a really bad music video to me where the music just doesn’t match the mouth quite right.  I’m sure the story of the characters pulls plenty of people in, and there was enough in one random episode that I sort of got the gist of things, but this will probably be my only episode.

What can I say?  Acapella groups and 12 year old’s on YouTube are more entertaining/impressive for Lady Gaga covers than this was.

REVIEW: Doctor Who – The Vampires of Venice

Posted by under *dislike, Television | Join The Discussion |

I knew from the opening of the episode that I just wasn’t going to like this one. It’s a perfectly fine episode, but after the excitement of the last two weeks I couldn’t help but be disappointed. Spoilers ahead.

Crashing Rory’s bachelor party was intentionally awkward, but it really only led to a few sight gags like a custom made “Amy + Rory” t-shirt showing up in the 16th century Venice. The whole concept of the trip as a date for the young couple just didn’t really thrill me.

The Sisters of the Water from planet Saturnyne were not very compelling enemies. I know there’s a vampire craze going on, but I was a little disappointed to see it reach Doctor Who. At least the show had it’s own take on the creatures, so I suppose it’s better than introducing actual vampires. Either way, it still felt like there was a creepiness that was absent from the episode.

Some interesting parallels were drawn between The Doctor and the Sisters’ leader, Rosanna, as the last hope of their kind. The connection extends to her people and the Timelords, and it seems like lasting damage may have been done from The Doctor witnessing the extinction of another species.

The highlight of the episode comes when we hear the silence that’s threatening the universe for the first time. It’s interesting that it happened just after Amy stepped into the TARDIS away from her “boys.” The mystery surrounding her deepens here, but this episode sets the low point for the season this far.
