Boooo! We totally beat England 1-1. Wait... What?

So most of us at MLD spent this past weekend at the former Wizard World East/Philly… which was renamed this year “the Philadelphia Comic Con.” This was an interesting move on Wizard’s part considering that there was virtually no presence at the event from the comic book establishment. Yes, there were comic book vendors and an artists alley, but completely missing from the festivities were representatives from DC and Marvel comics (as well as Dark Horse, IDW, Boom, or any other semi-major publisher). In fact, the only publishers I did notice at the event were Zenescope Entertainment, who publish a comic based on the defunct WB television show Charmed, and Avatar Press, who publish independent books from guys like Alan Moore, Warren Ellis, and Garth Ennis – none of whom were at the show. The lack of comic book companies showing up also meant there were none of the typical comic book panels highlighting what’s coming in the next year or announcements of any kind.

It has been a few years since I attended this show and so much has changed during that period.

We have already posted a bunch about the Philadelphia Comic Con thrown by Wizard and there is much more to follow.  I for one am fairly shocked by how much I came away with.  If you read this site for the comic book content, you don’t even know who I am.  If you know who I am from reading the site, you know that I am not a comic book fan.  In fact, we had cards printed up to hand out and one of my dislikes listed was comics.  Anyway.  My overall view of the Con… was that it was not about comics.  I had a great time, but I am completely exhausted.  And man, this all made blogging seem like so much work. If you’ve been paying any attention, you know that we spent our weekend deep in geekiness.  The Philadelphia ComicCon, formerly known as Wizard World, took place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  I tagged along because I wanted to be a good reporter and because the boys needed a cub photographer.  Luckily for me, comics seemed to be one of the last things on the agenda at the convention.  I felt a little silly passing out cards that clearly stated my dislikes included comics, but was redeemed by the many people enjoying my title of “token girl”.   There will be more to follow on everyone’s thoughts on ComicCon tomorrow, but I needed to sneak a post in tonight because I had an agenda. Something called the 2010 FIFA World Cup began yesterday… with both games ending in ties. The team representing the United States has their first… game? match? contest? (I’m sure there’s a proper term) today at 2:30PM EST against England. The World Cup is a global phenomenon that often goes unnoticed here at home. I know less about this stuff than I do about the NHL, so I’ve been doing some research online.

Here are some things you can do to get involved:

• Download the ESPN FIFA 2010 World Cup iPhone App
• Figure out what some of these three letter abbreviations mean
• Learn to chant
• Decide if you’re going to call it football or soccer
• Actually watch a game sometime in the next month

The MLD Team spent the afternoon at the opening day of the 2010 Philadelphia Comic Con. The day mainly featured vendors and entertainment personalities vying for fan attention, and I don’t even know if there was a single panel held on the site. Our new Twitter feed was a big part of the action so come follow along tomorrow and Sunday.

A lot of costumed characters were running around including rival groups of “Jedi” from Pennsylvania and New York. Hopefully, things will remain civil. We even had some great lunchtime entertainment at the Reading Terminal Market from a guy playing video game themes on the piano. The highlight of day one was easily taking a spin with KevinMLD in the George Barris Batmobile.

The evening entertainment was provided by the PhilyZombieCrawl.com in the form of a zombie beach party at The Trocadero. The official opening night after party featured zombie face painting and music from Bauhaus, The Misfits and other death obsessed moaners. Just two blocks away from the Convention Center, The Troc will also host Kaiju Big Battel as part of the weekend activities tomorrow night.
