LydonReviews Dinner for Schmucks

Last night after a dinner in Langhorne, PA at Jimmy Buffet’s Cheeseburger in Paradise, which warrants a post about crappy cover bands (a topic I know a thing or two about as PTB and KevinMLD will surely remember from my previous Diary of a Bass Player column from the old Break Even site), my wife and I saw Dinner for Schmucks, the American remake of the French movie The Dinner Game, itself based on the French play, Le Diner de Cons, both written by Francis Veber. Thanks for the info, Wikipedia! You make me look smart! Oh, and for those that don’t speak French, the translated titled apparently DOES mean “Dinner for Idiots”.

Who knew? (French people, probably)

REVIEW: Brightest Day #6

Posted by under *mixed, Comics | Leave a Comment |

We’ve had a week to digest the happenings of Brightest Day #6 since it shipped last Wednesday and there’s plenty to say. Our discussion covers green Martians, white Martians, Miss Martians and manhunting Martians along with more on Firestorm, Deadman, and Aquaman.

PTB and I also take moment to touch on the Brightest Day teaser image DC was showing off at this year’s San Diego Comic Con and how much these images usually amount to in the end.

Panorama X

Of all the big announcements coming out of this year’s San Diego Comic Con, it was a teaser image for the coming line of X-Men titles that grabbed most of my attention. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise since I’m a big fan, but the image got me to thinking about the long history of ultra-wide X-Men images I seem to go crazy for. What is it about these things that I love so much?

San Diego Comic Con 2010 via satellite

The Super Bowl of comic book shows is going down in San Diego this weekend and we’re missing it. Being on the East Coast, we here at MLD normally stick to local events. Luckily there are a bunch of ways to keep tabs on all of the news and announcements coming out of this year’s San Diego Comic Con.

Comic Book Resources has excellent coverage including live updates from panels and presentations. Newsarama is another great option for staying informed and they’ve provided what has been the highlight for me so far from yesterday’s X-Men panel:

The show has already brought us some other fun stuff including new information on TRON: Legacy, True Blood, and Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. Saturday’s panels include a lot of comic book/movie topics like Scott Pilgrim, Green Lantern and Marvel’s upcoming Avengers film. It all begins today at 1PM EDT.

Birthday at Beau Monde

Mrs. LydonWrites’ birthday was today, and she chose one of our favorite spots, Beau Monde, for dinner. Their website does an admirable job of telling you about their Breton-style crepes, but for the quick and dirty initiation, there are savory crepes (made of buckwheat) and sweet crepes (made of regular wheat flour), and filled with excellent ingredients that have never failed to make our mouths water. Likewise are the sweet crepes, filled with fruit, creme Anglaise, ice cream, and other delectable spreads like Nutella. Yeah… I just called Nutella a delectable spread. Deal with it.
